Specimen: Beaver
Location Trapped: Whitewater, WI
Date Caught: 3/31/2012
Submitted By: Dylan and Jen Dix
My wife and I are both first year trappers and after seeing demonstrations on beaver trapping during our trapping education class in Whitewater WI we were excited to try it this season. We got permission half way though season to trap a piece of land near our home but ice conditions were not safe enough to trap under ice at the pond. We finally had more time the Thursday before season ended. We set a few castor mound sets with 330s. The first day checking the traps one trap was set but with no catch, on the second day checking we caught our first beaver on the last day on the season weighing 23 lbs. We can 't wait until next year to try it again.

I finally caught this 40 pounder after 3 weeks of trying. He was as smart as they come and me being a complete rookie probly didnt help, I just started trapping at the end of December. He was in a friends pond and pretty much destroying the breast works and the trees surrounding the pond. He avoided leg-holds, 330s and snares baited with castor or food lure and plain old blind sets on his slides, he would simply take another route. I finally got lucky and just barley had him by the tail in a snare.

I caught the mink in a 160 conibear under a deadfall in the Neversink River set up against the bank on a point where a brook enters the river. The mink must have just caught the frog when it entered the trap. I did not have a camera with me on the line but I took the picture in my garage as soon as I got home. Before skinning the mink I had to pry the mink 's jaw open with a screwdriver to get the frog out of its mouth. I guess I interrupted its dinner!

Last Monday was the season opener, not knowing much about trapping I watched your video on beaver, very helpfull. I made my sets the best I could using #3 bridgers with offset jaws. Tuesday I had 2 sets hit, but both pulled free. So not wanting to educate them more I pulled the sets out and got different traps, #4 dukes, double coiled without offset jaws. I remade my sets yesterday evening using a different castor than what I had used earlier in the week. Upon making the last set one of the beavers snuck up behind me and gave me a good tail slap that startled the heck outa me, but made me smile. Upon checking them today I had caught 2, the 44 pounder and a small one, made my day. Not bad for the first week I had ever tried to trap a beaver. Not being greedy and wanting to save some for seed for next year, i pulled all my sets being content with what I have caught.

This spring I recognized that the beavers were skirting big oak trees around the lake. They had to go. As I investigated, I found two dens on the lake. I sat up in the woods behind one of the dens with a rifle and dispatched one the first evening. As I researched though, I found that the only way to clear them all out was to trap them out. I had never trapped before. Thanks to many of the online forums and a few great youtube videos, I outfitted myself with 3 conibear 330s and a bottle of backbreaker. Out of 8 sets, I caught six. After that, if there were any others, they left for the summer.

I had a 330 conifer set on both sides of a 12" Drain Pipe. I am guessing he was chasing bait fish into the pipe. Yes I know it isn 't a fur bearer, it is however funny.

One happy boy! My grandson Dylans first trip beaver trapping. Had a land owner that need the beavers removed due to them flooding his fields. 2 days 5 beaver later we were all done. The biggest 2 were 68 and 72 pounds. Once we got home I threw one in the trough, slipped on a pair of gloves to start skinning and he asked Papa wheres my knife? I told him pa was the only needing a knife for now. A minute later he was gone and I thought that didnt last long. The next thing I know he comes out of the house with a pair of gloves on an his toy knife and shouts lets get skinning BEAVER!

I finally went to the northwoods and got some beaver. I trapped these two on the first day, Nov. 23, 2011. The insight Tom gave me and I 'm assuming the "Beaver Plus" made it possible. Ended up trapping 5 in 3 days.
